  16. FAQ

Sweaters can look sleepy on the street. The knit is too neat, the jeans are too tight, and the outfit reads like office wear on a day off. A few small changes fix it: a looser shape, a bold texture or one odd layer.

These 14 street style sweater and knitwear outfits for men cover half-zips, cardigans, cable knits, mesh knits and turtlenecks. Each look lists the pieces, where to wear it and what to swap. The guide at the end covers fit, fabric and layering.

1. Color-Block Half-Zip With Wide Faded Jeans

Man leaning against a red wall in a cream half-zip sweater with grey-green sleeves, wide light wash jeans with a frayed hem and worn white sneakers
Photo: Mert Coşkun on Pexels

This is the street way to wear a sweater. The top is cream with sage sleeves, a bit boxy, and it sits over very wide jeans with a raw hem that pools at the ankle. Scuffed white sneakers keep it relaxed. The shape matters more than the brand: loose on top, loose on the bottom, and the color block gives you something to look at.

The pieces

  • Cream half-zip sweater with grey-green sleeves
  • Wide-leg light wash jeans with a frayed hem
  • White canvas sneakers

Wear it to: a gallery day, a record shop, a long walk with friends.

Swap: a full oatmeal half-zip if you want the quietest version.

2. White Cardigan With Navy Trim and a Black Tee

Photo: Murat IŞIK on Pexels

A school-style cardigan turns streetwear when you put a plain black tee under it and leave it open. The ribbing is thick and the navy edging draws a sharp V down the chest. You only see the top half here, so build the rest on your own: baggy dark jeans and chunky sneakers will keep the street feel.

The pieces

  • White ribbed cardigan with navy trim and gold-tone buttons
  • Black crew neck t-shirt
  • Add: baggy dark jeans (not shown)
  • Add: chunky white sneakers (not shown)

Wear it to: a coffee run, a campus day, a night out in cool weather.

Swap: a grey tee under it for a softer contrast.

3. Orange Sweater With a Plaid Scarf

Photo: zaid mohammed on Pexels

Rust orange is the one bold sweater color that still looks natural outside. The soft, fuzzy knit is and slightly oversized, and a plaid scarf in black and grey hangs straight down the middle. Black trousers ground the whole thing. It takes a warm color, a pattern and a dark base. That's all.

The pieces

  • Rust orange crew neck sweater
  • Black, grey and orange plaid scarf
  • Black trousers
  • Black cord bracelet

Wear it to: an autumn walk, a street market, a dinner with friends.

Swap: a solid black scarf if you'd like the sweater to stand alone.

4. Blue-Grey Marl Sweater With a Black Skirt and Boots

This one is a stretch from the usual, and that's why it works for the street. A mottled blue-grey sweater goes over a black knee-length skirt with a flared hem, and heavy black boots finish it. A dark collar shows at the neck. A wide studded cuff and a few rings add edge. If bare legs in winter sound wild, wear black tights or thick socks under it.

The pieces

  • Blue-grey marl crew neck sweater
  • Black knee-length skirt or kilt-style piece
  • Black lace-up work boots
  • Wide studded cuff and rings

Wear it to: a gig, a studio session, a night out downtown.

Swap: straight black jeans if you'd rather skip the skirt.

5. Cream Cable Knit Sweater With Black Trousers

Heavy cables look good on camera and even better in person. The knit has a deep braided pattern, so you don't need a print or a logo. The trousers are black and wide, and the sweater hangs loose. Black on the bottom lets the cream do the work.

The pieces

  • Cream cable knit crew neck sweater
  • Black wide-leg trousers
  • Add: black leather boots or chunky sneakers (not shown)

Wear it to: a night at the movies, a train ride, a casual date.

Swap: charcoal trousers if black feels too harsh.

6. Fair Isle Sweater With an Orange Beanie

A fair isle sweater is a ski-lodge classic, but track pants make it street. The pattern band across the chest and shoulders has a white and red motif on black, with a grey body underneath. An orange beanie echoes the red in the pattern. Black track pants keep the shape sporty.

The pieces

  • Grey fair isle sweater with a patterned yoke
  • Orange knit beanie with a pom
  • Black track pants

Wear it to: a cold-weather hangout, a skate park, a winter market.

Swap: a black beanie if the orange one feels too loud.

7. Camel Cable Knit With a Black Scarf

Photo: mehrab zahedbeigi on Pexels

Camel looks warm, and a black scarf keeps it from going too soft. The cable knit has a wide collar, so the scarf sits snug against it. Add a steel watch and clear glasses, and you've got the easy autumn look that works in any big city. Dark trousers finish it off.

The pieces

  • Camel cable knit sweater with a wide collar
  • Black knit scarf
  • Silver watch
  • Clear-framed glasses
  • Dark trousers (not fully shown)

Wear it to: a city stroll, a bookshop, a weekend lunch.

Swap: a grey scarf for a softer, lighter version.

8. Slate Ribbed Sweater With a Flat Cap and Backpack

Ribbed slate blue is the sweater you'll reach for on most mornings. A dark cap and a backpack with brown leather straps make it a commuter look, not a boardroom one. The knit is chunky enough to hold its shape under the straps. You can't see the bottom half, so pair it with straight dark jeans.

The pieces

  • Slate blue ribbed crew neck sweater
  • Dark cap
  • Backpack with brown leather straps
  • Add: straight dark jeans and boots (not shown)

Wear it to: a commute, a campus, a day trip.

Swap: a beanie in place of the cap for a more casual feel.

9. Dark Olive Rib Knit Over a White Turtleneck

Layering a sweater over a thin turtleneck is the trick here. The chunky olive rib knit sits on top, and the white roll neck pops out at the collar for a clean contrast. A black belt and cream trousers pull the colors together. It's a smart outfit that still looks lived in.

The pieces

  • Dark olive ribbed crew neck sweater
  • White fine knit turtleneck underneath
  • Black leather belt
  • Cream trousers
  • Round wire glasses

Wear it to: a gallery, a cafe, a cold-weather date.

Swap: a black turtleneck underneath for a sharper look.

10. Grey-Green Waffle Turtleneck With Olive Trousers

A turtleneck can look fitted and still feel like streetwear if the texture does the work. This one has a waffle weave in a soft grey-green, and it fits close through the chest and arms. Olive trousers keep it in the same color family, so nothing clashes. A beard and a short fade finish it.

The pieces

  • Grey-green waffle knit turtleneck
  • Dark olive trousers
  • Add: white leather sneakers or black boots (not shown)

Wear it to: a work-from-cafe day, a dinner, a winter walk.

Swap: black trousers if you want more contrast against the sweater.

11. Open Knit Blue Sweater With a Silver Chain

The knit has holes in it on purpose. It's a loose mesh weave in blue-grey, and it hangs wide off the shoulders. A silver chain, a metal watch and wraparound blue sunglasses make it feel like a streetwear piece, and pale blush trousers lift the color. It's the best pick here for warm autumn days.

The pieces

  • Blue-grey open knit crew neck sweater
  • Silver chain necklace
  • Metal watch and a beaded bracelet
  • Blue wraparound sunglasses
  • Pale blush trousers

Wear it to: a festival, a rooftop party, a sunny city day.

Swap: white or cream trousers for a calmer color pairing.

12. Striped Crochet Knit Shirt With Burgundy Trousers

Photo: Ken Vesper on Pexels

Knitwear doesn't stop at sweaters. This short-sleeve crochet shirt has bold stripes in yellow, navy and red, with big blue buttons and a yellow collar. It's loud, so the rest stays plain: a black cap, burgundy trousers and a steel watch. A few cord bracelets are the only extras. For more bold looks like this, see our colorful streetwear outfits.

The pieces

  • Striped crochet short-sleeve button shirt
  • Burgundy trousers
  • Black baseball cap with clear sunglasses
  • Steel watch and cord bracelets

Wear it to: a summer party, a street festival, a weekend in the city.

Swap: black trousers if burgundy is too much with the stripes.

13. Three Friends, Three Knit and Scarf Layers

Three friends, three knit layers. The man in the middle wears a navy turtleneck under a grey blazer with beige trousers and a flat cap. On the left, a cream sweater sits under a navy coat with a grey fringed scarf. On the right, a cream jacket and a navy scarf with black trousers. Brown leather on two of them ties the group together.

The pieces

  • Navy turtleneck under a grey blazer (middle)
  • Beige trousers and black leather shoes (middle)
  • Cream sweater with a grey fringed scarf under a navy coat (left)
  • Cream jacket with a navy scarf and black trousers (right)
  • Flat caps (middle, right)
  • Brown lace-up boots (left) and brown leather shoes (right)

Wear it to: a city weekend, a smart dinner, a gallery opening.

Swap: a black turtleneck for a sharper, darker version.

14. Beige Sweater Vest Over a White Shirt With White Trousers

On the left, a beige sweater vest goes over a white shirt with a collar, and baggy white trousers and clean white sneakers finish a head-to-toe light outfit. On the right is a dusty pink utility jacket over a black tee, with a small crossbody bag and black boots. Against a dark wall, the pale colors stand out. For more vests, see our knit vest outfits.

The pieces

  • Beige knit sweater vest
  • White long-sleeve shirt
  • Baggy white trousers and white sneakers
  • Dusty pink utility jacket with a black tee and crossbody bag (right)

Wear it to: a gallery, a night out, a photo walk.

Swap: grey trousers if white is hard to keep clean.

How to Wear Knitwear With Street Style

Fit comes first. For streetwear, a slightly oversized sweater works as long as the shoulder seam sits near your shoulder and the sleeves stop at the wrist or just below. Pair it with a bottom that has some width, like straight or wide jeans, so the top doesn't swallow you.

Choose a knit with texture. Cable, waffle, rib and mesh knits all look good on their own, so you can skip logos. Wool blends hold shape better than thin acrylic. Check the label and feel for a dense, soft knit.

Keep the palette short. Start with a main color and a dark neutral, then add at most one accent such as rust, sage or navy. Cream, grey, olive, brown and black are the safest bases.

Layer for shape. A collar or a turtleneck under a crew neck sweater adds depth. A scarf or a beanie adds a second texture.

Knit Wear it with Finish with
Half-zip Wide jeans White sneakers
Cardigan Black tee Baggy dark jeans
Cable knit Black trousers Boots
Turtleneck Olive or beige trousers Leather shoes
Mesh knit Light trousers Chain and watch

Start cheap. A plain grey or black crew neck in a wool blend is a good base. Add texture later with a scarf or beanie.

Skip the extras. No large logos on the chest, no skin-tight knits and no thin shiny fabric. If you like the hoodie side of the look, our streetwear hoodie and zip up outfits are a good next read.

FAQ

What is street style knitwear? Knitwear worn in a relaxed, urban way: boxy or oversized fits, wide jeans or track pants, sneakers or boots and a few accessories like a beanie or a chain.

Can I wear a sweater with baggy jeans? Yes. Keep the hem just below your belt line or tuck the front, so the outfit doesn't look like one big block.

What colors work best for sweaters in street style? Cream, grey, olive, brown and black are easy. Rust orange and sage are good accent colors when the rest is dark.

How do I stop a sweater from pilling? Wash it cold and inside out, dry it flat and use a fabric shaver now and then. Wool blends pill less than cheap acrylic.
