  20. FAQ

You only wear a graduation gown for a few hours, but what's under it shows in every photo. The sleeves are short, the front is open, and your collar, tie and shoes are the parts people actually see.

These 18 men's graduation outfits for college and high school show real grads and what they wore under the gown. Each look lists the pieces and says where it works. Some are full suits, some are just a shirt and trousers, and a few are about the party after.

Short on time? Start here

1. Royal Blue Suit With a Cream Bow Tie

A bright blue suit is the easiest way to stand out next to a sea of black gowns. The cream bow tie and pocket square match each other, so the color looks planned. Round glasses and a relaxed smile do the rest.

The pieces

  • Royal blue two-button suit
  • White dress shirt
  • Cream bow tie and matching pocket square
  • Black cap with orange tassel
  • Add black leather shoes (not shown)

Wear it to: an outdoor ceremony, the photos after, a family dinner.

Swap: A navy suit gives you the same shape with less color to manage.

2. Black Gown Over a Vest and Slim Black Tie

Leave the gown open and the outfit underneath gets to show. A dark vest with a white shirt and a slim black tie looks neat on a high school grad. The orange trim on the gown gives all that black a bit of life.

The pieces

  • Black gown with orange facing, worn open
  • Dark vest
  • White dress shirt
  • Slim black tie
  • Dark trousers

Wear it to: a high school ceremony, class photos, lunch with the family.

Swap: Skip the vest in hot weather. Shirt and tie alone still look sharp.

3. Red Gown, Gold Stole and Black Dress Shoes

Some schools hand you a bright gown, so let it be the loud part. A small burgundy bow tie and maroon trousers match the gown, and polished black shoes finish it. The gold stole is the only other color, so the red stays the star.

The pieces

  • Red gown with gold stole and matching red cap
  • White shirt with a burgundy bow tie
  • Maroon trousers
  • Black leather dress shoes

Wear it to: the ceremony, the photo on the steps, an awards night.

Swap: With a bright gown, stay in one color family below it, as here, or go dark navy or black.

4. Black Suit, Dark Tie and a Graduation Sash

This is the quiet option. A black suit, white shirt and dark tie never go wrong, and the sash adds the only detail you need. The man on the left adds a pinstripe waistcoat. Wear the sash flat over both shoulders so the gold fringe hangs straight.

The pieces

  • Black suit (plain on the right, pinstripe with waistcoat on the left)
  • White dress shirt
  • Dark slim tie
  • Black satin sash with gold fringe and a class year print (left)
  • Add black dress shoes (not shown)

Wear it to: a college commencement, a department ceremony, a formal dinner.

Swap: A charcoal suit is softer than black and works on more skin tones.

5. Two Bow Tie Looks, a Blue Suit and a White Shirt

Two ways to do the same day. On the right, a royal blue suit with a red sash and navy bow tie is the bold one. On the left, a white shirt, black bow tie and black trousers with the gown carried on one arm is the easy one.

The pieces

  • Royal blue suit with black satin lapels, red sash and navy bow tie (right)
  • White shirt, black bow tie, black trousers and brown belt (left)
  • Black cap with red tassel
  • Black dress shoes

Wear it to: a college ceremony, a party after, group photos with friends.

Swap: Carry the gown for the photos and wear it only for the stage if it's hot.

6. Dark Green Double-Breasted Jacket With Sunglasses

A dark green double-breasted jacket is a good pick if navy feels too expected. The shirt collar is open, so the whole look stays relaxed. He carries the gown, cap and medal on one arm, which makes a nice shot before the ceremony.

The pieces

  • Dark green double-breasted jacket
  • White shirt, collar open
  • Dark trousers
  • Dark sunglasses
  • Navy gown, cap and medal on the arm

Wear it to: a graduate party, photos before the ceremony, a rooftop dinner.

Swap: A charcoal double-breasted jacket is the safer version.

7. White Shirt, Navy Trousers and a Black Belt

Not everyone wears a suit, and you don't have to. The guy on the right shows the simple version: a crisp white shirt tucked into navy trousers with a black belt. Add a tie and you're done.

The pieces

  • White dress shirt, tucked in
  • Navy trousers
  • Black leather belt
  • Black gown with gold stole (left)
  • Add a tie and dress shoes (not shown)

Wear it to: a hot-weather ceremony, a family day out, cheering on a friend.

Swap: A light blue shirt is a softer option than white.

8. Black Gown, Navy Trousers and White Sneakers

This is the college-casual take. Under the gown he has navy trousers and clean white sneakers, which are smart enough for the stage and comfortable for a long day of sitting. A white shirt collar peeks out at the neck.

The pieces

  • Black graduation gown and cap with red tassel
  • White shirt, collar visible
  • Navy trousers
  • Clean white leather sneakers

Wear it to: a long ceremony, an indoor hall, the party after.

Swap: Dark brown loafers make it a little smarter.

9. Gold Hood Over a Pale Grey Collared Shirt

The gold hood on a black gown already says it all, so keep the shirt simple. A pale grey collared shirt under it is clean and doesn't clash. Make sure the collar sits flat so the gown doesn't bunch up.

The pieces

  • Black gown with gold hood and cap
  • Pale grey collared shirt
  • Diploma with a red ribbon
  • Add dark trousers and shoes (not shown)

Wear it to: the ceremony and the portrait afterward.

Swap: A white shirt is brighter in photos if your gown is dark.

10. Grey Trousers With a Blazer Over One Shoulder

The back-view photo is a favorite for a reason. A white shirt, grey trousers and black shoes look clean from behind, and the blazer hooked on one shoulder adds shape. Hold the cap down by your side.

The pieces

  • White dress shirt
  • Mid grey trousers
  • Grey blazer, hooked over the shoulder
  • Black leather dress shoes
  • Cap with a gold tassel

Wear it to: a campus walk, a grad photo shoot, an afternoon ceremony.

Swap: Put the blazer on if it gets cool. The outfit works both ways.

11. Black Satin Gown Over a Grey Sweater

Photo: Pavel Danilyuk on Pexels

Under the gown he has a grey crew neck sweater with a white tee collar showing, so it's a relaxed outfit. It's close to what a lot of high school and community college grads actually wear. The gown covers most of it anyway.

The pieces

  • Black satin gown and cap with red tassel
  • Grey crew neck sweater
  • White tee, collar showing
  • Diploma with a red ribbon

Wear it to: a high school ceremony, a cool morning, a casual signing day.

Swap: For the party, swap the sweater for a plain white shirt.

12. Kente Stole, Black Gown and White Sneakers

A kente stole is a proud, meaningful piece, and a plain black gown shows it off best. He crouches down in white sneakers, which makes it feel like a street-style photo. Keep everything else plain.

The pieces

  • Black gown with a kente cloth stole
  • Dark trousers
  • Black graduation cap
  • White sneakers

Wear it to: cultural graduation events, photos after the ceremony, casual celebrations.

13. Green Gown, Striped Tie and a Black Suit

Green and black go together better than you'd think. The black suit under the green gown keeps it serious, and the navy and white striped tie is the one detail that shows. Sunglasses are the personality piece.

The pieces

  • Green gown with orange trim and green cap
  • Black suit jacket
  • White shirt
  • Navy and white striped tie with a gold clip
  • Dark sunglasses

Wear it to: a university ceremony, a staircase photo, a family lunch.

Swap: A solid navy tie is the plain version if stripes feel busy.

14. Navy Gown Over a White Striped Tunic

Photo: Abdulkadir muhammad sani on Pexels

This is a traditional take. A long white striped tunic under a navy gown looks calm and neat, and the white piping on the hood echoes it. A book in one hand and a scroll in the other finish the shot.

The pieces

  • Navy graduation gown with a white piped hood
  • Long white striped tunic
  • Navy cap
  • Add white or cream trousers (not shown)

Wear it to: a cultural ceremony, a master's graduation, a studio portrait.

Swap: Sandals or dark loafers both work with the tunic.

15. Navy and Red Gown With a Plain White Shirt

The pieces

  • Navy gown with red front panels
  • White collared shirt
  • Red certificate folder
  • Add dark trousers and shoes (not shown)

Wear it to: a school ceremony, a family photo, a certificate handout.

Swap: A thin navy tie works if your school asks for one.

16. Green Blazer, Grey Waistcoat and a Patterned Tie

Photo: Karl Rayson on Pexels

This is the dressiest look on the list, and it's all in the layers. A dark green blazer over a light grey waistcoat, a white shirt and a teal patterned tie looks like a three-piece with some personality. The tie bar keeps it in place.

The pieces

  • Dark green blazer
  • Light grey waistcoat
  • White shirt
  • Teal patterned tie with a tie bar
  • Teal pocket square (small, in the breast pocket)
  • Grey trousers

Wear it to: a master's ceremony, a graduate dinner, a job fair afterward.

Swap: A plain white pocket square is calmer if the teal feels like too much.

17. Blue Jacket Over the Shoulders With a Navy Bow Tie

Photo: Chris wade NTEZICIMPA on Pexels

Wearing the jacket over your shoulders is a relaxed way to do a suit. A white shirt, navy bow tie and blue trousers give you a clean base. The red tassel on the cap is the one pop of color.

The pieces

  • Royal blue suit jacket, worn over the shoulders
  • White shirt with a navy bow tie
  • Matching blue trousers
  • Black belt
  • Black cap with red tassel

Wear it to: a hot day, a photo shoot, a party after the ceremony.

Swap: Put the jacket on for the stage and drop it for pictures.

  • Black vest
  • Black trousers
  • Black leather loafers
  • Dark jacket over the shoulder, gold honor cord and black cap with an orange tassel

Wear it to: a university ceremony, a campus photo, a graduation lunch.

Swap: If it's cold, put the jacket on and keep the vest underneath.

How to Choose What to Wear Under Your Gown

Check the school's rules first. Some schools want a white shirt and dark tie, others only ask for dark shoes. A quick look at the guidelines saves a last-minute change.

Think about the neck, the hem and the feet. The gown covers your torso and most of your legs. What shows is the collar and tie at the top, your trousers below the hem, and your shoes. Put your effort there.

Fit matters more than price. Shoulders of the jacket should end at your shoulder bone, and sleeves should show a little shirt cuff. A jacket that's too big looks worse under a gown than no jacket at all. If it's hot, wear only the shirt and tie.

Pick colors that work with your gown.

Gown color Shirt Trousers and shoes
Black White, pale grey or light blue Navy, grey or black with black shoes
Navy White or pale blue Grey or black with black or dark brown shoes
Red, green or other bright White Dark navy or black with black shoes

Think about the day. Outdoor ceremonies are hot and long, so a light shirt and a jacket you can take off will keep you comfortable. For indoor ones you can wear a vest or a full suit. Sneakers are fine if they're clean and dark or white, but dress shoes look better in photos. Our guide to school shoes for guys has options that last.

Plan for the party after. If a dinner follows, see our guides to prom suits for men and navy suit color combinations for ideas. And if you're heading to job interviews next, these interview outfits with a tie will work with what you already bought.

FAQ

What should a guy wear under a graduation gown? A collared shirt and tie with dark trousers and dark shoes is the safe answer. If it's warm, a shirt alone works. Check your school's guidelines first.

Do you have to wear a suit to graduation? No. A white shirt, tie and dark trousers is enough, and the gown covers everything else. A suit is a good option if you want to wear it again for interviews.

What color shirt is best under a black gown? White is the easiest because it shows at the collar. Pale grey and light blue also look clean in photos.

Can I wear sneakers to graduation? Yes, if the school allows it. Keep them clean and plain, in white or black. Dress shoes still look better in full length photos, so bring a pair for the pictures.
